With the election coming close, many already decided citizens are just waiting for their opportunity to vote. Fortunately, 40 states (plus District of Columbia) allow some form of voting before the election on November 3rd.

Each state has its own rules, deadlines and terminology for voting before the general election. Some call it "early voting" or "in-person absentee". Others are mailing out ballots in advance which you can mail back or drop off in secure boxes or at county offices. Some states conclude early voting several days before the election.

You have until November 2, 2020 to vote before election day.

Can you early vote in person?

  • You can vote in person during early voting. Early voting will be held from Monday, October 26, 2020 through Monday, November 2, 2020. Early voting centers will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.

  • Any person that is registered to vote can vote during early voting. Any person that is eligible to register to vote can vote can also vote during early voting.

  • Registered voters have always been able to vote during early voting, but now individuals who are eligible but not yet registered can register and vote.

  • To register and vote during early voting, go to an early voting center in the county where you live and bring a document that proves where you live. This document can be your MVA-issued license, ID card, or change of address card, or your paycheck, bank statement, utility bill, or other government document with your name and new address. You will be able to register to vote and vote.

Can you early vote by mail?

  • For the November 3, 2020 election, every eligible voter will receive an absentee ballot application in the mail.
  • Any registered Maryland voter can request an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

What about on election day?

Maryland voters must provide their Maryland driver's license number, state ID number, or the last four digits of their social security number with their voter registration application.

How do I make sure I'm registered to vote?

To register in Maryland you must:

  • be a U.S. citizen
  • be a Maryland resident
  • be at least 18 years old by the next general election (you may pre-register if you are at least 16)
  • not be under guardianship for mental disability
  • not have been convicted of buying or selling votes
  • not have been convicted of a felony, or if you have, have completed serving a court ordered sentence of imprisonment, including any term of parole or probation for the conviction

Can I register online?

Maryland voters must include their Maryland driver's license number, learner's permit number, or state photo ID number with their online voter registration application.
