With the election coming close, many already decided citizens are just waiting for their opportunity to vote. Fortunately, 40 states (plus District of Columbia) allow some form of voting before the election on November 3rd.

Each state has its own rules, deadlines and terminology for voting before the general election. Some call it "early voting" or "in-person absentee". Others are mailing out ballots in advance which you can mail back or drop off in secure boxes or at county offices. Some states conclude early voting several days before the election.

Early voting has started in Nebraska!

You have until November 2, 2020 to vote before election day.

Can you early vote in person?

  • Nebraska is a “no-excuse” state, meaning any registered voter may request an early-voting (absentee) ballot, and is not required to provide a reason.

  • You can apply for an early-voting ballot by contacting your county election office in person, by mail or by fax. You can print an online early-voting application, complete the form, and then mail, fax or scan/take a picture of your application and email it to your county election office. The last day for an early-voting application to be received is 6 p.m. on the second Friday preceding the election.

  • You can vote early in-person at your county election office for a period prior to an election (30 days prior to a primary or general election and 15 days for all other elections). The day before the election is the last day to vote early in person.

Can you early vote by mail?

  • For the November 3, 2020 election, every registered voter will receive an absentee ballot application in the mail.
  • Any registered Nebraska voter can request an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

What about on election day?

Nebraska voters must provide their Nebraska driver's license number, state ID number, or the last four digits of their social security number with their voter registration application.

How do I make sure I'm registered to vote?

To register in Nebraska you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States;
  • be a resident of Nebraska;
  • be at least 17 years old to register and at least 18 years old by the general election
  • if convicted of a felony, two years have passed since the sentence was completed (including any parole or probation);
  • not have been officially found to be mentally incompetent; and
  • not have been convicted of treason, unless you have had your civil rights stored.

Can I register online?
