With the election coming close, many already decided citizens are just waiting for their opportunity to vote. Fortunately, 40 states (plus District of Columbia) allow some form of voting before the election on November 3rd.

Each state has its own rules, deadlines and terminology for voting before the general election. Some call it "early voting" or "in-person absentee". Others are mailing out ballots in advance which you can mail back or drop off in secure boxes or at county offices. Some states conclude early voting several days before the election.

Can you early vote in person?

Yes! In the 20 days leading up to Election Day, you can vote in person at your city or town hall during their regular business hours.

Can you early vote by mail?

  • Any registered Rhode Island voter can request an absentee ballot and vote by mail.
  • For the November 3, 2020 election, every registered voter will receive an absentee ballot application in the mail.

Rhode Island voters must provide their Rhode Island driver's license number, state ID number, or the last four digits of their social security number with their voter registration application.

How do I make sure I'm registered to vote?

To register in Rhode Island you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • be a resident of Rhode Island for the 30 days before Election Day
  • be at least 16 years old to register and at least 18 years old to vote
  • not be currently incarcerated in a correctional facility due to a felony conviction
  • not have been lawfully judged to be mentally incompetent
