A "yes" vote on this measure means licensed tribes or gambling companies could offer online sports betting over the Internet and mobile devices to people 21 years of age and older on non-tribal lands in California; those offering online sports betting would be required to pay the state a share of sports bets made; a new state unit would be created to regulate online sports betting; and new ways to reduce illegal online sports betting would be available.
A "no" vote on this measure means sports betting would continue to be illegal in California and no changes would be made to the way state gambling laws are enforced.
"Voters are rightfully upset about the huge number of Californians who don't have a roof over their heads. But don't be fooled into thinking that Proposition 27 is going to solve homelessness. As the state budget overflowed with surplus dollars the last two years, California lawmakers committed $13.5 billion to provide shelter and services to people who lack homes. Taxes from sports betting would provide an ongoing source of funding, but the amount may not wind up being a game-changer.", in opposition to Proposition 27 (Learn more)
"Digital drugs like online gambling are engineered to be addictive, and unfortunately, they're working exactly as intended. I regularly see patients with severe addictions to digital drugs. Prop 27 would drastically increase the risks of gambling addiction in California." - Anna Lembke, MD, in opposition to Proposition 27 (Learn more)
"The Solutions Act protects Tribal sovereignty and will allow every Tribe – not just those with big casinos close to big cities – a chance to directly benefit from online sports betting in California. The measure puts Tribes firmly in control of online sports betting in California." - Jose "Moke" Simon, Chairman of the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians, in support of Proposition 27 (Learn more)
"As legalized sports betting continues to expand across the country, Major League Baseball remains committed to protecting the integrity of its games and creating a safe experience for fans who wish to wager on those games. Proposition 27 – the only measure on California's upcoming ballot that would authorize and regulate online sports betting – includes strong integrity provisions designed to help MLB carry out those commitments." - Major League Baseball, in support of Proposition 27 (Learn more)
