While recognizing the role of deterrence and punishment in the criminal justice system, he is attuned to the need for comprehensive programming and treatment as integral aspects of sentencing structures, so offenders can develop skills that will enable them to break the cycle of criminal conduct and become productive and contributing members of the community. David is committed to the public schools, and will work to provide the best available educational system for our children. He opposes State payments to charter schools, which have the impact of weakening the public education system. He also opposes efforts that currently are underway in other parts of the United States to incorporate religious education as part of the public school system. Learn more
David’s experience has led him to the firm position that more comprehensive mental health care and substance abuse treatment and programming should be provided in Vermont. All too often, people who are struggling with substance abuse in Vermont can engage in short term treatment, but long term programming is unavailable. In addition, the structures now in place in Vermont are inadequate both to care for people who are experiencing mental illness, and to support family members and neighbors who want to help. Housing insecurity is a very substantial issue in Brattleboro, regionally, and nationally. David is committed to working on solutions. This may include regulation of short-term rentals, and more comprehensive planning for our aging population, so more supportive housing is available. David’s position is that government should work for development of additional housing and increased availability of affordable housing. Learn more
Because Brattleboro is the area’s regional economic hub, its residents pay disproportionately high real estate taxes, and if elected David will work in an effort to bring about more equitable revenue sharing with the State. David also will work to ensure that funding sources for necessary services are sustainable and transparent, so property taxes are not burdened by double digit tax increases. Learn more
