Get StartedFred believes that no woman decides to have an abortion whimsically. It’s a serious decision that almost any woman contemplating having one would struggle with. But, in the final analysis, physical autonomy . . . CHOICE . . . Is as fundamental a right for women as it is for men, and Fred will fight in the legislature to keep other legislators and local governments from infringing on that right. Like the vast majority of Americans, Fred believes that abortions should be “Safe, Legal and Rare”. Learn more
Formulas applied mathematically to determine pretrial detention and/or bail have failed miserably, since every individual case is different. Judges need to start making rational judgements on an individual basis instead of just refering to a chart during preliminary hearings. And, if a person is incarcerated for a crime, there needs to be more of a focus on rehabilitation as opposed to simply punishing the offender. For first-time offenders, the worst thing that we can do is to put them into an environment where all that will happen is that they'll get an "education" from the career criminals that they're locked up with. Our whole criminal justice system needs to be examined and revamped. Learn more
While local elected school boards should certainly be integrally involved in the educational process in their communities, there should be minimal standards for running for election to those important positions. Learn more
Most charter schools are excellent, but there are some that are little more than for-profit diploma mills. Charter schools should be audited regularly, and their outcomes need to be closely monitored. Many private and church-run schools do a great job, but parents who choose that option should pay the price for their own decisions. Vouchers for students to attend those schools take money away from a public school system that needs more money, not less. And, if parents wish to home-school their children, that is once again a matter of choice, and the child’s progress should be evaluated on a regular basis to ensure that home-schooled children are receiving the level of education that every child deserves. Teachers’ salaries need to be increased far more. Schools need to be fully funded for supplies so that teachers don’t need to dip into their own pockets to purchase basic classroom supplies. Qualified classroom Educational Assistants are just as important as the teachers that they work hand-in-hand with, yet EAs make barely above minimum wage. Learn more
We still need fossil fuels and we want an expanding population to increase our tax base and encourage companies to relocate here, but we need to think outside of the box to find new and better ways to conserve and increase our water supply. Simply telling homeowners to drill deeper doesn't cut it. Innovative projects like the San Juan-Chama Diversion Projet are helpful. We need more like them, but we need to do more. Our state's government can do more to assist those in agriculture in the implementation of below-the-surface irrigation systems to minimize evaporation while watering their crops. Water treatment facilities could improve their processes by applying modern technology and putting potable water back into the water delivery system. Learn more
Fred believes that both sides need to come together and have a rational discussion about where the line between modern warfare weapons and antique technology should be drawn. And wherever it's drawn, gun owners must be more than "lawful" gun owners. They need to be responsible gun owners. Learn more
Our immigration system is broken. That much is true. It needs to be fixed so that we can legally welcome this new influx into our workforce. But that’s a job of the federal government, not the New Mexico House of Representatives. Fred will stand tall in the legislature, opposing those who would have us become like the racist and xenophobic isolationists in Texas, building steel and razor wire barriers to keep people out. Immigrants are not “poisoning the blood of America”. They are giving us a very necessary transfusion. Learn more
