Get StartedThis means instituting the computerized officer complaint catalog, so that fired officers cannot simply hire on in another dept. Dealing with unions so that the protection of officers who violate standards and practices is no longer the normal practice. Committing officers to be bound by the policies they sign and agree to so that terminations are final and complete. Instituting a form of “malpractice insurance” for police officers. Learn more
All police officers should have body cameras activated at all times. Whether in the car or out of the car. This will require a new assignment of trained professionals to review and store footage. It’s likely that the vast majority of footage might be disposable. But that will require trained and authorized consensus by people who are objective and unaffiliated. Specific rules will make these decisions easier. All footage remains on file for 90 days, and then a review process takes place, to see what can and cannot be deleted. As well as standard and often random review by the Federal and Community Oversight Commission. Learn more
The Mpls. police dept. currently has almost 900 officers and another 200 associated staff. Rather than 1 large dept., we should have 4, 5 maybe even 6 much smaller depts. each tasked with providing professional detailed services, and each operation, that much more controllable, efficient and responsive. End the practice of stopping people in their car. Learn more
Rather than allow police officers to exert their authority over individuals by following them, or pulling them over for a perceived driving infraction, large cities should allow a separate division of Peace Officers to handle this issue. Learn more
That’s why we must IMMEDIATELY INSTITUTE A NEW SYSTEM OF PEACE OFFICERS to handle all non-violent and non-threatening calls for help. Learn more
End the use of dogs as an aggressive police accomplice. Safety dogs, bomb sniffing dogs, rescue dogs are all a useful and advantageous addition to law enforcement. But attack dogs, used strictly to catch and control suspects, are both wrong and unnecessary Learn more
For far too long, the police have been expected to police themselves. I think it’s fair to say that we all understand that this was always a flawed and misguided approach. We need an outside agency that can be objective and responsive to all claims and charges of police misconduct, including all uses of force, deadly and otherwise. Learn more
An emphasis should be placed on de-escalation, rather than force. Currently, police officers spend 16 times more time on the gun range than they do in the training of any other kind, let alone, specifically in de-escalation techniques. Cops work too much on their ability to physically control a suspect, when they should all be learning how better to control their own emotions. Learn more
Yes, there are people who want to have marijuana legalized for recreational use, and it’s highly likely that will happen in the near future. The point is, there’s no reason to rush the entire country into a position with which it doesn’t agree. Learn more
Uniforms accomplish many things. 1.) They absolutely help to balance morale and self-esteem. 2.) They lower the cost of clothes for every family. Instead of new clothes, students need only 2 sets of uniforms. Learn more
Sending children to school at a much earlier age, the strict use of real uniforms, and increasing the length of the school day and year. Learn more
Simply increasing availability of affordable housing and homeownership opportunities will solve this problem. Learn more
The goal being for people to transition from [the Homeless Hotel], to their own housing option. So as people move on, space will become available. People who have legal or criminal issues will be able to utilize the legal resources available to effectively process through the system. People who have addiction issues will be able to utilize the rehab program to be able to process through the system. People who have mental health issues will be able to utilize the healthcare facilities to be able to process through the system. Everyone will have an assigned caseworker who can help facilitate each client's need right there on-site. The building would operate through a unique combination of viable income generation, (legitimate business income, sales, taxes and rent...) as well as non-profit and NGO based support, as well as local, state and federal govt. funding and financing. (govt. funding and financing, I would add, we are already making, but to little or no avail...) Learn more
To that end, home buying must be encouraged, facilitated and at times, even govt. subsidized. Rather than a capitol-based purchase agreement (how much money you make, determining how much you can pay, determining how much you can afford) we need another basis of qualifying for home-ownership. For example, allowing any person who holds and keeps employment for a number of years to be eligible for home-ownership. Learn more
We need viable community centers to provide the basic needs of the most vulnerable and downtrodden of our populace. Without the most basic facilities; bathrooms, showers, beds for the night, food and meal services, clothing, etc., we are failing those of us who are depending on us to not fail. Learn more
Legal Immigration is a critical and necessary part of the American experiment, and it needs clarity, confidence and control measures that allow everyone to benefit and enjoy an expectation of safety and assurance. Learn more
