Publicize the Right to Appeal any Salem-Keizer School’s disciplinary actions (especially suspensions and expulsions) to the School Board Directors to protect the student’s rights and to ensure proper process was followed in the disciplinary decisions. Learn more
Parents and families should have opportunities to learn about their rights, understanding of public school system, what is expected from their students, availability of after school learning opportunities, and the role they can play in helping their students. Let families and parents have a choice to seek the best opportunities for their students from within the district or early college programs, tutoring and additional learning opportunities for their students. Sustainable investments: good ideas can’t thrive in a hierarchical organization (top down). Let’s think beyond two years and use our resources for initial investment. We must allow working programs to grow and allocate grants to school-led projects. Each school needs a flexible budget and parameters to work on a project and meet the requirements of the ESSER. This can lead to starting STEM fields, career pipelines, and expand CTEC programs in digital fields, health care, data sciences and similar high demand opportunities for the future. Learn more
Let us evaluate the impact of existing ESSER investments and identify what is working and what is not. Did we meet critical milestones and how their efforts are (or aren’t) beginning to translate into improved student learning and wellbeing? This will allow us to expand what works, modify what needs adjustment, and discontinue what is not working. Are we having a transparent process for our community to hold us accountable? Families and parents and guardians must be involved in matters of health, safety and learning needs of their students. All board and district policies and practices must attempt to strengthen student connectedness with their own families, school, and peers. Learn more

School-Private sector collaboration: With more intentional effort to increase private sector partnerships, we can help our students have more opportunities for tutoring, mentorship, and internship programs with an emphasis on ‘Scholarship, Mentorship and Sponsorship’ for future career pathways. Ensure Dual Language immersion and a commitment for budget allocation with a plan for its expansion to increase multi-language/cultural competency to serve every student in the district. Parents and guardians should have online and physical access to all curriculum, books and supplies to enable them to keep their children on-track for graduation and include them in what is being taught in classrooms. Learn more
Students and families should be encouraged to learn about college savings plans and similar preparations for advanced education/training. Learn more
