I'm disappointed in the state legislators who in 2017 voted to usurp local control and dictate to individual school districts how they must spend locally raised funding initiatives. Additionally, I don't approve of the State Board of Education -including my incumbent opponent- forcing districts to open schools the locally elected board of education reviewed and decided was not best for their community. State legislators and State Board of Education members don't know the challenges or needs of individual communities nearly as well as the locally elected district officials. When the state is overruling local districts' decisions on what types of schools they will open and, at the same time, telling county homeowners they must fund those schools, we can sadly no longer call Colorado a "local control" state. I support charter schools who value parental input and work with the local district to serve the entire community.I'm not a fan of for-profit out-of-state charter managment companies who are increasingly invading our state and taking advantage of our weak school accountability laws. We need to tighten up our laws and policies to promote local parent-driven charters while discouraging out-of-state profiteers from taking advantage of Colorado taxpayers. Learn more

I believe Colorado is over-testing its students and should immediately cease exceeding the federal minimum mandates for standardized testing. Colorado has one of the largest opt-out rates in the country because our students are suffering from testing fatigue. Additionally, student achievement scores should not be used to measure educator or school effectiveness. Too many outside factors influence student test scores for them to be reliably used to reward/punish teachers and close schools. Learn more
