Crime in Charlotte is increasing every day and is taking a toll on the community. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is struggling to handle internal affairs within the school district. Such as the multiple times that students throughout the city have been bringing guns to schools and jeopardizing the safety of staff and other students. Altercations between students in CMS have even gone so far in 2022 that led students from three local high schools to fire more than 150 shots into a home. Thus killing 3-year-old Asiah Figueroa has died and his 4-year-old sister was injured. Those students who participated in the horrific crime should be charged to the fullest extent of the law and we must take action to protect the staff and students at CMS by assigning more school resource officers throughout the school district. Nationally violent crimes have decreased, but that is not true here in Charlotte. Unfortunately, in the last three years, the rate of violent crimes has consistently increased in our wonderful city. This is why we must explore every possibility to reverse this situation. We must give our police the tools they need to protect our citizens and to protect themselves, but we must also give them the training they need to serve the public equitably and with true and honest justice. We must not lose sight of the fact that a strong police force alone will not solve the crime problem. Until we find a way to address the various issues affecting those who choose or are forced to become criminals. We must focus as much energy on rehabilitation and prevention, as we do on punishment and incarceration. We should be spending as much time on community outreach as we do on prisons. Above all, we must do all that we can to honor and protect the brave men and women in blue, while at the same time ensuring that we honor and respect the rights of all people, even those guilty of committing a crime. Climate change is the single greatest threat to our planet. Every election cycle, we elect career politicians who serve in the best interest of large corporations and the fossil fuel industry rather than their constituents who elected them. If we don't actively join the fight to save our planet, the effects of climate change will soon become irreversible. We must pass a Green New Deal to combat climate change Learn more
